Fee-for-service health care: the basics

Fee-for-service health care allows you the freedom to choose your own physician, is flexible when it comes to specialist referrals and provides comprehensive coverage.

These plans do not cover the cost of check-ups, shots or any other preventative medical services.

Fee-for-service health care: the price

Fee-for-service health care plans are costly. The price includes:

  • monthly premiums,
  • a yearly deductible
  • a per visit out of pocket payment.

Fee-for-service health plans: the types

There are three kinds fee-for-service health plans:

  • Basic health insurance
  • Major Medical insurance
  • Comprehensive insurance

Basic health insurance includes:

  • Hospital room and board and hospital care.
  • Some hospital services and supplies.
  • Surgery.
  • Some doctor visits.

Major Medical insurance includes:

  • Treatment for long, high-cost illnesses or injuries.
  • In-patient and out-patient expenses.

Comprehensive is a combination of the two.

The price varies with the level of coverage.
Bottom line: fee-for-service health plans allow more freedom and security, but cost considerably more. If the price is to high, check out managed care plans.
